December in Pre-K

Crafting is a big part of Pre-K

Sometimes we do impromptu projects like this painting one. Four students chose to paint at he easel. More students wanted to paint so we made a painting table and soon most of the class was busy creating, mixing colours, telling a story in pictures, and discussing our work.

It isn't a holiday if we don't make some food. These young students are actually quite capable cookie cutters thanks to all the practice with playdough. Icing is still a bit of a trick and needed some guidance.

Mrs. Pearson is always happy to craft along with our budding artists.

Once in a while we do a BIG PROJECT we used CUT & COLOUR time to create a special wreath. After several days of making decoration for the wreath our Grade 5 Reading Buddies helped us with the gluing. Gluing is still tricky like icing. It is hard to control and it is messy.

They all enjoy time playing together when time allows.

Poor kids: 

It is a right of passage for Saskatchewan kids to discover first hand the science of freezing metal and moist tongues.

Sorting is a very important skill in Pre-K and Kindergarten

 In our classroom there are many opportunities to develop sorting skills.
The ability to identify the purpose of items and understand how items are the same or different is the beginning of literacy. To READ, you must be able to see how letters and words are the same or different. To comprehend you must be able to understand language that describes.

Here you see samples of how the FOOD goes in the fridge, the baking dishes go in under the stove and the eating dishes go in the cupboard.

 Dress up can be sorted too.

The masks are in one box, hats in another, costumes in the big box and shields beside the costume box.

Kindergarten - November 2019

November was another wonderful month of learning for everyone in Kindergarten.

Remembrance Day - our poppy search

 Mrs. Dyck's friend, Mrs. Jackle, visited an art class and helped create sunset colours and taught us some simple ways to draw trees and snowflakes.


We shared our progress and goals with our parents at the Student/Parent/Teacher Conferences. 
Every day we begin our day with white board work.

This month we began a new unit of Math. We are making 3-D Shapes with playdough and paper. We are sorting 3-D shapes according to attributes like names (cube, pyramid, sphere, cylinder, rectangular prism or cone) shapes of faces (square, triangle, circle, rectangle) and edges (curved or flat).
We will search for  examples of 3-D shapes in our environment. These pictures feature their paper cubes, which were turned into dice, and cubes in the classroom.

Another part of this unit is creating graphs and reading them. "Roll your dice, now tell us what number you rolled. Look at our graph and tell me what number was rolled least, most and if any are tied."

We were sad to say good-bye to Mrs. Willford, she was with us all last year and at the end of most days this year. Mrs. Pearson is excited to have moved from the School Librarian to Education Assistant.

Kindergarten is snow much fun!
